Bee Sweet Citrus (the makers of Sweethearts® mandarins) and Wonderful Citrus (the largest citrus grower in the US and the company behind Halos® mandarins) use oil wastewater to irrigate our food. The Center for Food Safety has a letter you can send to the presidents of both companies asking them to stop putting their profits before our health.
Oil companies use toxic, cancer-causing chemicals in their operations and then supply their wastewater to irrigate crops. This has not been proven safe - not for the health of the public nor for the health of farm workers who are exposed firsthand to the chemicals found in the wastewater. Both companies claim to care about public health but are failing to protect farm workers and the public from potential health risks.
Big Oil has taken advantage of the desperate need that California farms have for irrigation water and is selling oil wastewater at a cheap rate. The practice is expanding rapidly in California, which produces over a third of the country's vegetables and two-thirds of the country's fruits. This is an urgent food safety and public health issue.
