International Water Footprint Comparisons

In this chart, the total volume of freshwater used to produce consumer goods and services on a per person basis is presented for a variety of countries. The water footprints are calculated in two parts - water used domestically, and water used outside of the country to produce those goods. The numbers vary greatly between countries because they’re based on a country’s consumption patterns, its climate, and water-use practices in those regions where consumer goods are produced.

You can find your country’s water footprint on the Water Footprint Network (WFN). The WFN also provides statistics for most countries’ virtual water imports and exports, and for the total water footprint of national consumption.
